How not to burn down your residence

The other night we had a lecture on how not to burn down your residence.

I came in five minutes late. By that time the lights were off in the George Ignatieff Theatre and the projection screen was showing a fire safety video. I came in just after some careless stooge left a cigarette or something on the armrest of his recliner. The recliner was in flames and the narrator, in a grim voice, told the audience that the temperature above the seat was very hot. Apparently, the flames, blackening the ceiling, were no indication of that.

I think every educational video I've seen has been made by the same production company, from the Incident at Woodson High (a detective story about lab safety) to the cleverly named Changes (about puberty).  That latter film made me want to belt out its upbeat theme song about body hair that began like this: "Chan-ges keep falll-lliing like the sunshine and raaiiinnnn".  You bet they did.

I have to admit, however, that the fire safety video and the lecture that followed were very effective and I'm now aware of not only how to prevent fires but also what to do in the event there is a fire. Like not too long ago, when a student here was so upset about a mark he received on a math paper that he put it in a garbage can and lit it on fire.

I used to be like that. When I was 7 years old and in Grade 2, I went behind my elementary school with the rest of the boys one lunch time in February and lit garbage on fire. It wasn't my idea and I never held the lighter. But these days, especially after the lecture on fire safety, I'm more likely to be putting out garbage can fires then starting them. Joking aside, 425 of us live in the college's two main residences, Trinity and the adjacent St. Hilda's. Our safety is very important.
