The perfect Christmas gift . . . from my prof

Jenny Mitchell

On the first day of classes, my chemistry professor made an interesting announcement: "If there's a mistake in the course notes, the first person to notice will get a 2% bonus on the final exam."

It became my full-time job. The instant a new set of notes were posted, I would read them. Twice. And then I'd compare them to the corresponding chapter in the textbook. The online discussion board for the class was filled with posts:

"You spelled 'molecule' wrong on page 5. Does this count?"

"The date at the top of the notes is wrong! It says Wednesday, October 15th. It's actually Thursday, October 15th."

Uh, nice try.

By the end of the semester, I hadn't found any mistakes. I don't think anybody did. At first it seemed like a huge waste of time - for the past few months I had been reading every single note three times, forwards and backwards, and I had nothing to show for it.

But then I realized something: the chemistry prof had given the entire class the perfect Christmas gift.

We were all totally prepared for the final exam.
