Blaming university for assault is irresponsible

A 20-year-old York University student was the victim of what police are describing a "severe sexual assault" Tuesday night near the North York campus.

The area which the assault occurred is a Toronto Conservation Authority owned parkland along an unofficial walking path from York University to a residential area known as "The Village."

The student was treated and released from hospital. Police are investigating and have three suspects.

The York Federation of Students wasted no time in blaming York University sending a news release out within hours of the police informing media of the assault. In the release, YFS vice-president Darshika Selvasivam held nothing back stating: "How many more women are going to have to survive sexual assault and rape before the York administration takes real action to protect women on and around campus?"

Such strong statements must be supported with either evidence of neglect or a solution which would prevent a similar sexual assault from happening outside of the university campus. The YFS provided neither.

The fact is that very little is publicly known about this attack. It is known that it did not occur at York University and that the victim was walking on her own at the time.

Concerns have been expressed about the unofficial walking trail which has been a popular shortcut for students, but to what extent the university should be held responsible for advocating these concerns is a matter of debate.

There is clearly a need to consider changes to prevent further assaults in the York University community, but blaming the administration of York University for this incident does nothing to prevent further assaults and merely discredits the YFS.
